Operating Accessories with the SC-2

In addition to controlling switches, the Lionel SC-2 can be used to operate up to twelve accessories, using six as momentary control and six as on/off. Pressing the AUX 1 (also used for the “Through” switch route) acts as a momentary contact switch, turning on the accessory for as long as you hold the button on your remote. AUX 2 (aka the Out route) acts like an on/off switch. Press once to turn the accessory on, then press again to turn it off.

Wiring Accessories

The SC-2 can control up to twelve accessories.

Wiring the SC-2 to your accessories couldn’t be much easier. The SC-2 is basically a set of electronic toggle switches: 6 momentary and 6 on/off. You are wiring these switches into the AC Ground connections from your accessories to your transformer. So, if you’ve wired accessories to switches before, or if you are converting an existing layout to command control, then this process will be very familiar.

Each of the six accessory positions has just three wire connections. The common position should go to your fixed 14 volt AC accessory power. The wire from the Aux 1 position can be used for the ground for momentary contact operation (push and hold to activate) and the Aux 2 for on / off operation. You can wire an accessory to operate either way, wire it for one only, or wire multiple functions of the same accessory like a Gateman where you want separate control of the light and animation.

It is easier to show this wiring than describe it, so to see how we wire two typical accessories, a light tower and an operating Gateman, just follow along with this short video: [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfLGGu3Cx6o&feature=g-upl]

Programming the SC-2

To program the SC-2 to operate 6 accessories, first set the switch on the side of the unit to the Program position. Then complete the following with your TMCC or LEGACY remote:

  1. Press Switch
  2. Press 0
  3. Press Set
  4. The red LED on the SC-2 will illuminate for one second to confirm the command.

Next we need to program the addresses for the accessories. For 1-6 do the following with the cab:

  1. Press Accessory
  2. Press 1
  3. Press Set
  4. The red LED on the SC-2 will illuminate for one second to confirm the command.

For addresses 7-12, enter “7” in step two, for 13-18 enter “13”, etc. Up to 99 accessories can be controlled with your command control system.

Put the switch back in the operations position when you are done programming.

Operating Your Accessories

What will you control?

To control your accessories, simply enter the accessory number into your cab and press the Aux 1 or Aux 2 key.

The SC-2 will handle any accessory up to 4 Amps in current draw – so just about anything you can dream of to attach to it! This means you could also wire several smaller accessories to activate simultaneously from one of the outputs. For example, a freight yard with four light towers could be controlled by a single control as long as you don’t want to turn each light off and on individually.
